Letter: Shameful celebration

To the editor:

As I watched the final moments of the KU basketball game at K-State on Feb. 23, I did what I imagine many fans did: accepted that the team that had played best as a whole was going to win, not my beloved Jayhawks.

What happened at the final buzzer when fans stormed the court with no respect for anyone’s safety was shameful. Coach Self may not have been too worried about himself as he was pushed against the scoring table, but Jayhawk fans that love him dearly were. Our players shoved and hit? KU has a target on them because they are that good and I hope our players understand that.

I don’t think any form of court-storming should be allowed but that would come down to the NCAA making that rule and I’m not holding my breath for that one. What will it take? Someone hurt or even killed in the trample? KU fans aren’t perfect. No fan is. Emotions run high, so why allow this pathetic game to continue that plays out after the real game?

Celebrations can come in many forms and can be organized easily respecting everyone’s safety. I’ve always cheered on K-State except when we are playing them because, after all, they are a Kansas team, but today I look at that differently. I’m extremely proud of our Jayhawks for showing restraint and class in that situation!
