Overnight javelin sensation Tye Carter has decided to continue his young track-and-field career at Kansas University, which he said has guaranteed him a partial scholarship.

Carter’s family and friends gathered Monday night at Legend’s for a ceremonial signing party for the Free State High graduate who made an official visit to KU on Thursday and made a verbal commitment that night.

“Coach (Stanley) Redwine was super nice,” Carter said. “I had talked to him a lot during the visit and he was super nice and helpful, filling me in on everything, making me want to come to Kansas a lot more than Nebraska. He did his (recruiting) job well.”

Carter said he was on a visit from noon to 8 p.m. and received a call from Redwine later that night.

“He called me and asked when I was planning on making a decision,” Carter said. “I told him I had already decided and planned on going to KU.”

Carter, a football player at Free State, played baseball his first three years and did not pick up a javelin until his senior season. He broke the school record and went on to win the 6A state title.
