Letter: Pay for performance

To the editor:

Watching the events unfold in our capitol over the last several weeks has finally put me over the edge. Obviously, our lawmakers need some suggestions on how to resolve their differences since they have not been able to accomplish this on their own. Since they are so anxious to attract small businesses to our state, I would like to suggest that they run the state government in a similar fashion.

In a small business environment you get a bonus if you finish under budget and on time. On the contrary, you get docked in pay if you don’t finish on time or over budget. Enact a law that pays a bonus if legislators finish their work before the 90 day session is over. However, if you don’t get your work done, the legislators pay the $43,000 per day that it takes to run the session!

It is obvious to me that our representatives have not had enough incentive to do their work. It is also ridiculous that the main reason we had all these tax cuts in the first place ostensibly was to attract new small businesses to Kansas. I ask you, who in their right mind would want to move their business to a state with such a dysfunctional government? Why would I make my employees move their children to a state that is so unsupportive of public education? This session has wasted over $946,000! Shame on all of you!
