Lawrence woman, 38, in critical condition following Wednesday collision on K-10

A 38-year-old Lawrence woman was in critical condition Thursday after a head-on collision on Kansas Highway 10 Wednesday morning, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said.

Nicole Allensworth was eastbound on K-10 in a Toyota Corolla around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday when her car struck a center pylon at K-10 mile marker 7, Dymacek said.

Investigation into the accident revealed that Allensworth likely over-corrected, causing her vehicle to “end up crossing into the westbound lane of traffic,” Dymacek said. That’s when her vehicle collided with a westbound Nissan Altima, driven by 24-year-old Yusif Abdulhakeem, of Merriam.

After the wreck, Abdulhakeem was taken by ground ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, but has since been released from the hospital, Dymacek said.

Allensworth was taken by helicopter ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., in critical condition, Dymacek said. As of Thursday afternoon, she remained in critical condition.
