Suspect in Monday’s armed robbery arrested in Topeka

Douglas County Sheriff's deputies search for a man they say was involved in a strong-armed robbery in the 1800 block of East 1450 Road about 5:15 p.m. Monday. A man entered Heartland Perma-Column, 1841 East 1450 Road, displayed a handgun and took an unknown amount of money, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said. The man is considered armed and dangerous.

A 26-year-old Topeka man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in a Monday armed robbery at Heartland Perma-Column, 1841 East 1450 Road, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said.

Sheriff’s deputies, Lawrence police and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers assisted in a search Monday for a man, now thought to be Wesley L. Harris, Jr., who allegedly displayed a handgun at Heartland and took an unknown amount of money from the business.

The sheriff’s office and the Lawrence Police Department set up a perimeter and searched for the man with dogs and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter in the area generally south of Grant Township. The patrol helicopter flew over the area from about 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Monday.

The sheriff’s office has continued investigating the armed robbery since Monday, but the arrest was made with the help of many, including the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and the Topeka Police Department, Dymacek said.

“Tips from the public, as well as surrounding law enforcement agencies, assisted detectives in identifying Harris, Jr., as the suspect,” Dymacek said.

Harris was arrested in Topeka and taken to the Douglas County Jail. He was charged Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and theft.
