Law enforcement officers are searching for a man they say was involved in a strong-armed robbery in the 1800 block of East 1450 Road about 5:15 p.m. Monday.

A man entered Heartland Perma-Column, 1841 East 1450 Road, displayed a handgun and took an unknown amount of money, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said. There were two employees inside during the incident, but no one was injured, Dymacek said.

The man then fled southward on foot, Dymacek said. He was last seen near Riverfront Park, 1594 N. Third St., on the railroad tracks.

The sheriff’s office and the Lawrence Police Department set up a perimeter and searched for the man with dogs and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter in the area generally south of Grant Township. The patrol helicopter flew over the area from about 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.

Law enforcement officers were seen along the west side of U.S. Highway 59 just north of Lawrence near Riverfront Park for about two hours Monday evening. Some officers searched businesses and residences, while others searched along the railroad tracks that cut through Riverfront Park.

Officers downgraded the search at 8:15 p.m., sending some law enforcement units on to other assignments. Dymacek said that as of 8:45 p.m., several law enforcement officers remained in the area searching for the man and investigating the incident.

The suspect is described as a black male about 5’6″ with a thin build, short hair and patchy facial hair, Dymacek said. He was wearing a red ball cap with a Washington Nationals logo and a black bandana underneath, a black or gray shirt, black shorts, socks and tennis shoes. He is considered armed and dangerous.

The man could be associated with a charcoal gray four-door Honda Civic or Honda Accord with tinted windows. There may have been two other individuals inside the vehicle, Dymacek said.

Those with information on the incident are asked to called CrimeStoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477). Calls to CrimeStoppers can be made anonymously.
