Letter: Fresh start on station

To the editor:

Police Chief Khatib apparently wants to ignore the voters and simply repackage the defeated police station plan. The plan was defeated because voters lost trust in the previous City Commission and were opposed to the plan itself.

The previous commission first lost credibility when four commissioners (not Amyx) approved a $12 million no-bid contract for Rock Chalk Park. Regarding the proposed police station, Commissioners Farmer and Schumm remarkably believed it was appropriate to promise free land to the Boys and Girls Club to get votes for the proposal.

In April, two commissioners were soundly defeated, one commissioner did not seek re-election, and Commissioner Farmer was lucky he was not on the ballot. The top vote getters were Soden and Boley, who campaigned on a comprehensive evaluation of police operations and staffing as it relates to a new facility. Rather than repackage the defeated plan, the other commissioners should reconsider their position and join Commissioners Soden and Boley (and the voters) in support of a comprehensive evaluation.
