Letter: Go local on art

To the editor:

Although Lawrence prides itself on supporting local business and industry, large artist commissions for the East Ninth Project (formerly known as the 9th Street Corridor Project) will most likely go to artists living outside of Lawrence. According to recommendations given in a draft by the design team hired by the city, local artists will compete with a national search. A committee led by the design team will choose artists.

There are many Lawrence and regional artists who have experience creating major installations across the country. Local artists are a valuable resource to this project because they are a member of the community and are responsive to the needs of the neighborhood.

Boosting the local economy and its artists are intended outcomes for the project on Ninth Street. Approval of this plan should include hiring local artists for this project.
