Letter: Religious liberty

To the editor:

I was taken aback Sunday morning when I opened my Journal-World and found a blatantly religious advertisement from the owners of Hobby Lobby, the Green family of Oklahoma City.  The fact that this was an “advertisement” was presented in very small, barely readable text.

These folks are well known for their opposition to giving benefits to their employees based on their supposedly “religious  objections”

We live in a time where separation of church and state is very much the position of the citizenry. But the far right does not like this, and “religious liberty” seems to be advancing upon us. The governor of Kansas has expressed his concern for people’s “religious liberty,” but it seems that this means that HIS religion should be the most dominant religion in government policy.

I am wondering just how much “religious liberty” is protected by such advertisement as the Green’s assertions. Since this community is also the community of Jewish and Islamic religious, the appearance of this diatribe in the local newspaper comes as a real concern.

We are in danger of allowing “religious liberty” to impact on our own liberty. The government and governor of Kansas needs to take this into their plans to allow citizens to use this excuse to discriminate and disallow against other residents of the state of Kansas.
