Letter: High standards

To the editor:

Jennifer Kimball Brown makes a good point in her letter to the editor (“Valued artists,” Public Forum, July 1). A jury with a bias for bicoastal versus midwestern art would be very unfair to the locals. Choosing a selection committee without some kind of bias would be very difficult, but one way to level the playing field would be to make sure the work being judged is not identified by its place of origin. That said, it is hard to see how a project that will attract many art lovers with deep pockets to the area would displace any area artist, especially if the local art is good enough to be displayed in a local gallery.

Art work exhibited in the famous east and west coast galleries and museums like the Guggenheim and Getty is not local but the best from anywhere in the world. If Lawrence wants a quality destination for art lovers we should adopt the same high standards.
