Letter: Shakespeare slight

To the editor:

Kansas University was once known as “the Harvard of the Plains.” As a longtime subscriber to the Journal-World, as well as a longtime professor of English at KU (now retired), I cannot help observing a steady stream of new administrators or new administrative titles to present faculty — titles and positions which carry connotations of distinction, which may well be deserved.

Where, though, is the biggest name in the history of our culture: William Shakespeare? There has been no distinguished professor specializing in Shakespeare since the loss of Charlton Hinman. This is sad.
