Letter: Stand required

To the editor:

Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical weekly, was destroyed on Wednesday. Yet another barbarous act threatens civil societies around the globe. There is nowhere to hide. Journalists are our loudest voice, but not our only voice. When free speech in any form is attacked our collective freedoms are called into question.

If any news outlet remains silent in the frightening, ugly aftermath of such an event, their voice becomes smaller and less relevant. Not all “news”papers need be the New York Times. However, when the very foundation on which they print is savaged, a stand is required, if they claim to be printing the “news.”
