Letter: An embarrassment

To the editor:

Thank you for your Feb. 18 editorial, “Who’s absurd?” The editorial said that Kansas State Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro was conducting an online poll to help him decide what color jacket to wear in a Kansas House of Representatives photo.

The editorial went on to indicate that Rep. Peck made a comment on the budget request from state universities regarding funding. Rep. Peck is quoted as having emphasized “the absurdity of some of the enhancement requests.”

What the Journal World’s editorial did not bring up was that on March 14, 2011, during a committee discussion about a state plan to use gunmen in helicopters to control the feral swine population, this same Rep. Peck said: “If shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a (solution) to our illegal immigration problem.”

The feral hogs/immigration statement made by Peck, was in my estimation, an embarrassment to the state of Kansas. That statement was distributed worldwide by local, state, national and international news media

I’m grateful for the Lawrence Journal-World’s editorial. Such media exposure helps to enlighten the public about what I consider the erratic statements and activities of an elected official of the Kansas Legislature.
