Letter: Another milestone

To the editor:

The Journal-World sportswriters provide interesting and insightful articles regarding different players for men’s basketball at Kansas University, but they obviously are not interested, or concerned about exceptional KU basketball players on the women’s team.

This past weekend, Perry Ellis was lauded for scoring 1,000 points during his basketball career at KU and there was preliminary expectation by several J-W sports reporters about Ellis joining the other 1,000-mark KU players during the days prior to the game. (“Ellis set to join 1,000-point club,” Feb. 14, “Ellis joins 1K club,” Feb. 15).

During the same week, the J-W sportswriters completely ignored the approach of KU women’s basketball player, Natalie Knight scoring her 1,000th career point. When Knight scored that record number of points on the same day as Ellis, there was only a one sentence acknowledgement on a J-W sports page on the day afterward. (“KU women tumble to Texas,” Feb. 15).

It is quite noticeable during the 2014-15 season that J-W sports reporters have covered KU men’s basketball with minutia, while resorting to merely a double-wide, 5-inch, color-shaded column for women’s basketball with the heading: “KU Women at a Glance.” J-W sports reporters have consistently given KU women athletes only a “glance” in reporting their games. Will J-W sportswriters take notice and write a feature article about the career achievements of Natalie Knight, a new member of the KU 1,000-point club?
