Letter: Sex ed defense

To the editor:

This is a reply to Miss Jinkens letter of Feb. 7. Her comments were totally illogical, ridiculous and outright fabrications. She links sex education in school to abortions and particularly Planned Parenthood. This idea is ludicrous. The whole purpose of sex education in schools is to enlighten young adults to make smart decisions when it comes to sex and thereby eliminate the need for an abortion.

Let’s face it, teens are very sexually motivated and need to know about contraceptive devices if they do choose to have sexual relations. I went to a Christian school and was deprived of this information and later really regretted it. Miss Jinkens infers Planned Parenthood profits from their support of sex education. Here are a few facts for you. Nationwide, abortions account for 3 percent of total Planned Parenthood services. Only 10 percent of Planned Parenthood clients receive abortions. By law, no federal funding may be used for abortions. Also, 97 percent of Planned Parenthood services were used for testing and treating sexually transmitted disease, cancer screenings and distributing contraceptives.

Most parents I have talked to favor sex education in school and feel it is crucial to a well-rounded education. People that oppose sex education and birth control also seem to be  against paying taxes for welfare. It’s a typical conservative opinion: Let’s bring every embryo to term but after that they are on their own, don’t bother me for financial help! What hypocrisy!
