Letter: Distorted truth

To the editor:

World leaders struggle with finding some kind of compromise to enforce carbon emissions limits. David Reynolds’ letter (Public Forum, Dec. 11) brings out “scare tactics” to accuse them all of serious denial. However, he doesn’t offer any evidence that the vast majority of climate scientists and conclusions from basic physics are wrong.

We can see what passes for evidence among them. Vincent Muirhead’s letter in the Journal-World (“Climate politics,” Dec. 8) claimed to provide some. He listed four things: (1) One country with a leftist government asserted that capitalism is to blame. (2) He noted that ice levels in Antarctic have been increasing. No mention of worldwide ice levels, which are well-known to be decreasing. (3) He reported that one glacier in North America did not recede between 1925 and 1966. He didn’t mention what happened after 1966. (4) He dragged out the old red herring about the 1970s’ so-called threat of an ice age — which, in fact, is based on a Newsweek article about the conclusions of one researcher.

Really, members of this group of people are like Donald Trump: There are small grains of distorted truth buried under their hype. They would be really funny if they weren’t dangerous.
