Letter: Seeking solutions

To the editor:

Thank you, to the Justice Matters mental health research team. This team initiated the changes in thinking, visioning and planning for the creation of a crisis stabilization center for those who suffer from mental illness and/or addiction issues. Faithful volunteers on this Justice Matters team have persisted at every step to ensure continuing attention to this critical step toward improving services.

The crisis center will serve as an alternative to jail when law enforcement is involved. It would be available as well for individuals to walk in for services any time of the day or night. Family or friends seeking crisis help for their loved one could take them to this center.

Recognition and appreciation also goes to Douglas County Commissioner Mike Gaughan. He is championing mental health services, as he promised at the Justice Matters Nehemiah Action Assembly at the Lied Center last May. He is bringing together over 60 leaders representing service agencies, health professions, law enforcement, business and the justice system and creating planning groups to develop and implement comprehensive mental health services in the area.

Justice Matters is a coalition of 20 faith communities in Lawrence that brings large numbers of people together to change systems causing injustices affecting thousands of our people. Volunteers research the problems and seek effective tested solutions that have worked in other communities. These solution proposals are then taken to officials having authority to bring about changes.
