To the editor:

At last! Kansas University football season is over! I am not so glad because of our poor record this year. I am primarily glad because I will no longer have to read, every Sunday morning, the cruel listing of names under “Game Balls & Gassers.”

The “Gassers” refers to the sports staff’s identification of the players they have selected as having performed the worst! Really? Do we get such information for KU basketball or any other KU sports team? No!

These young men are STUDENT-athletes, not professionals. In spite of our losing record, I was always impressed by the general enthusiasm and effort put forth by this team.

A concept such as “Gassers” to me is a form of journalistic bullying. Thus, may I reward the Journal-World sports staff with one giant Gasser, with the Most Valuable Gasser Award going to Tom Keegan. Go Hawks!
