Two victims taken to hospitals after vehicle crash south of Clinton Lake

Two people were taken to area hospitals after a two-vehicle crash near Clinton Lake on Sunday evening.

Emergency responders block off a portion of roadway near East 850 and North 950 roads, where two people were critically injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday evening.

About 7:45 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the crash south of the lake near the intersection of East 850 and North 950 roads. According to Sgt. Donn Dunkle of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, three men, whom he estimated to be in their 20s, were involved in the accident, which left one vehicle resting on its roof in a roadside ditch.

One of the men was taken by helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center, Dunkle said. Another was taken by ambulance to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka. Dunkle said he believed both men were in critical condition. A third man refused medical treatment, Dunkle said.

Dunkle said he believed alcohol and speed were both factors in the accident, and around 9 p.m. Sunday, officers were still trying to determine who was driving.

Kansas Highway Patrol officers were investigating the accident late Sunday. Portions of the road remained closed at 9:15 p.m.
