Letter: Waning democracy

To the editor,

An oligarchy is a small group of people having control of a country, organization or institution. The Kansas-based Koch brothers (one of many examples) are reportedly planning on spending a billion dollars on very conservative candidates in the upcoming election cycle.

We will never know for sure how much the Koch brothers or anyone else spends because of the devastating “Citizens United” Supreme Court ruling. This horrible ruling states that any amount of secret money can be given to any candidate, at any level of government, (no questions asked).

Social Darwinism is back, on steroids. Are the Koch brothers and their ilk doing this out of the kindness of their hearts, or do they see a fire sale on democracy? A democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state. Looking at what Citizens United has unleashed, democracy is a concept close to being relegated to the dust bin of American history. God help us.
