Lawrence High swimmer Hannah Lee was one of three seniors who was honored in the middle of Tuesday’s LHS quadrangular, and she was smiling after the Lions came away with a victory on her special day.

The Lions scored 444 points to defeat Washburn Rural (361), Leavenworth (196) and Shawnee Heights (165) and highlighted a day that Lee had been looking forward to for a long time.

“I’m really honored to be a part of the team, especially with the other two wonderful girls,” Lee said. “I’ve been waiting for four years for this day, so it means a lot, and I’m really happy to be a part of the team.”

Lee was joined by fellow seniors Alex Ginsberg and Nicole Oblon in being recognized on Tuesday, and LHS head coach Kent McDonald said that the Lions’ three captains, all honors students, have excelled in much more than swimming.

“Even some of the teachers will tell me that we’ve got a really smart team of really good students. That’s really what it’s about. You can see that with all the things they do,” McDonald said. “They don’t just do swimming. They do academics, they’re in Showtime, band, orchestra; they’re in everything. Overachievers.”

Each senior was a key part of at least one of LHS’ three champion relay teams, as the Lions swept the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

LHS took first place in six individual events as well, with freshman Morgan Traughber and sophomore Mary Reed-Weston each winning two.

Traughber coasted to victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, while Reed-Weston won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Sophomore Brittany Archer and Lee respectively won the 500 freestyle and 50 freestyle to round out the event champions for LHS.

The Lions will be back at it on Friday when they head to Free State for the City Showdown.
