Letter: Bad bargain

To the editor:

Having just returned to Lawrence after an absence of a few months, we had our first look of the new library. What a disappointment. We remember the requirement the city had for the bookstore at Seventh and New Hampshire: It must keep the walls of the old brick building because it was so close to the historic Eldridge Hotel and yet they let this ugly monstrosity, so out of keeping with downtown architecture, be built a short block from the hotel. In our opinion the library building is ugly, sterile, and has lots of wasted space. What a bad bargain for $18 million.
