Teens plead not guilty to attempted aggravated robbery charges

The three teenagers who allegedly skipped school and attempted to rob a Lawrence gas station last week pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of attempted aggravated robbery.

The charges stem from an Aug. 29 incident when Lawrence police responding to a call of suspicious activity found the three teens, one 14, one 15 and one 16, approaching the rear of a Phillips 66 gas station at 3300 W. Sixth St., Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

The teenagers then hid behind an ice machine and began covering their faces with bandanas, McKinley said. One of the teenagers was carrying a BB gun and two of them were carrying long sticks, McKinley said.

After an interview with the three at the Lawrence Police Department, McKinley said, investigators determined the teenagers had conspired to rob the gas station’s convenience store.

The suspects are being charged as juveniles. They are currently in custody at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
