A man shot in the hand while outside a Lawrence apartment complex Wednesday morning is being treated for his injury at Lawrence Memorial Hospital as police search for the unidentified male assailant.

The injured man told Lawrence police he was outside an apartment complex near the intersection of 25th Street and Redbud Lane just after 6:30 a.m. when an individual shot him, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Trent McKinley said. The victim said the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction before officers arrived, McKinley said.

Lawrence police secured the area around the apartment with caution tape for about five hours Wednesday morning.

Later Wednesday afternoon, detectives learned the shooting stemmed from a brief dispute between the male suspect and the victim, though some details remain unclear, McKinley said.
