Kissimmee, Fla ? Led by frontcourt player Perry Ellis and backcourt partner Frank Mason III, Kansas University’s basketball team outrebounded Tennessee, 44-22, in Friday’s 82-67 Orlando Classic semifinal victory at HP Field House.

The 6-foot-8 Ellis had 13 rebounds — one off a career high — and the 5-11 Mason six boards, a career-best mark.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, the way they play and they play small a lot, they are not going to be a great rebounding team,” KU coach Bill Self said of (2-2) Tennessee. “They kind of remind me of Nolan’s (Richardson) teams a bit at Arkansas in that they get outrebounded, but they make it up on deflections and steals and that kind of stuff. We’ve rebounded it better since we’ve been here (two games in Florida). I think we were plus-9 yesterday (against Rhode Island) and plus-20 something today.”

KU’s plus-22 rebound margin was its best since outrebounding Eastern Kentucky by 24 in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Landen Lucas had five boards in 12 minutes; Cliff Alexander and Wayne Selden Jr. four boards in 20 and 33 minutes; and Brannen Greene three boards in 18 minutes.
