? Kansas University sophomore guard Wayne Selden Jr. was whistled for a flagrant one foul for hammering Kevin Punter on a layup try with the Jayhawks up 10 late in the first half of an 82-67 win over Tennessee at the Orlando Classic.

Punter hit the layup, hit two technical foul shots and Tennessee scored on the ensuing possession for a six-point play, cutting the deficit to four points.

KU coach Bill Self said official James Breeding said it was definitely flagrant. Selden appeared to hit Punter in the head.

“I’m sure it was,” Self said. “He said it was excessive contact on the foul. It wasn’t that it was a bad foul, just he hit him above the shoulders excessively, too hard. I know they are doing as much as they can to protect kids when they are put in awkward situations.

“That didn’t bother me, the call, as near as much as the play. We go from having the ball to potentially them having a seven-point play. Plays like that kill us. Two nights in a row we foul a guy on a three-point shot on a simple out-of-bounds play,” Self added.

KU freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. hacked Detrick Mostella on a three on Friday. The bucket and free throw gave UT a 17-15 lead.

“Tonight he made it and got the and-one. I mean, you have total momentum and give up a four-point play,” Self said.

Selden did not complain to the media. “It’s what they called,” he said of the flagrant foul.

He was hammered on a layup try later with no flagrant foul called on UT.
