Central Soyfoods item fails to pass at County Commission
As expected, the Douglas County Commission on Wednesday did not approve a conditional use permit for a small tofu producer to operate out of a rural county home.
Needing a 3-0 vote after neighbors collected the required petition signatures, Central Soyfoods, currently located at 710 E. 22nd St. in Lawrence, will not be permitted to move its production equipment and operate out of a residence along the 1100 block of East 1500 Road.
Commissioner Jim Flory, Third District, had previously indicated he was not likely to give his thumbs up and followed through on that Wednesday. He complimented the business but framed the matter as a zoning issue, in which he said it would be inappropriate for a “freestanding commercial activity” to operate out of a residential area.
