Letter: Educational holidays

To the editor:

I was very disappointed to see that my former alma mater, Hillcrest Grade School, has decided to cancel Halloween and Valentine parties at the school. I hope administration reconsiders this decision and reinstates this tradition.

I feel they are missing some vital educational opportunities in these festive cultural traditions. Students could research historical figures and characters from books to dress up in the Halloween parade. It’s important to share this information with students from a variety of cultures and nations.

Handwriting and letter writing have become a lost art for students. Students could work on addressing a letter and composing Valentines for their school friends. Also, creative artwork could be incorporated into Valentine activities.

Parents always have an option to take their child out of the parties, but I don’t think a whole group should be denied the opportunity for cherished childhood activities, The Hillcrest school administration should get input from their PTO, parents and students about the change in not having Halloween and Valentine parties at the school.

Children learn socializing, caring for others and other benefits from this cherished holiday tradition.
