WWII grenade found by homeowner, military personnel detonate it

A man’s discovery of a World War II-era grenade in a home he was remodeling resulted in a controlled explosion by military personnel Monday night in West Lawrence.

After the man discovered the grenade, he called Lawrence police who contacted Fort Riley’s bomb squad because it was a military device, city spokeswoman Megan Gilliland said.

The team came to Lawrence, removed the device from the home in the 900 block of Missouri Street and, with the Lawrence police, took it four miles to the 1800 block of Wakarusa Drive.

In a large city-owned field, the team dug a hole and buried the grenade. It was then detonated according to military protocol, Gilliland said.

Many people heard the explosion and took to Twitter to discuss it.
