West Lawrence explosion caused by team destroying military equipment

An explosion heard in West Lawrence around 6:30 p.m. Monday was caused by a team from Fort Riley destroying old military equipment, Sgt. Craig Shanks of the Lawrence Police Department said.

The equipment, which Shanks estimated was from the World War II era, was buried deep in the ground in the 1800 block of Wakarusa Drive. The team set off a charge that caused the explosion and made the equipment nonfunctional, Shanks said. He said the public was in no danger.
