Letter: Seeking peace

To the editor:

Your story honoring veterans of the Vietnam War who were Kansas University alumni reminds us that there were many veterans of that war who survived the wartime but, for years after, suffered and ultimately died as a result of their service.

There are no names engraved in memorials for these veterans, my oldest brother included in this group. There is no going to Washington and finding his name on a wall of granite, only the memories of the scars that war left on him and that finally did him in.

For all veterans of all wars, there is truly only one way to honor them and that is to stand up for peace, to struggle against the powers that bring on war and to insist on peace at all costs and in all conflicts.

When we glorify the veterans, we perpetuate the idea of war. Honor them by making the world a world of peace.
