Today in Lawrence: Heat returns, road work begins

So long cold, hello heat

After dealing us a hand of record-breaking lows, Mother Nature will show us a summer flush this week, starting today with a high of 84 and low — yes, low — of 64. Isolated thunderstorms will cool us off a bit this evening. Then Tuesday we’ll be in the 90s.

Road work

Some major street-centered construction projects will likely throw a wrench in your traffic plans starting today. At 23rd and Iowa streets, crews will begin rebuilding the city’s busiest intersection. That work is expected to last until mid-November. And the tunnels below Sixth and Iowa streets that lead to McDonald Drive will be closed for six weeks while work to strengthen and extend them is underway.

Divine wind

At 7 p.m., head to Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St., for a free screening of Showtime’s “Years of Living Dangerously.” The episode takes a look at wind energy in Kansas, from farmers dabbling in the green industry to lobbyists denying climate change.

King me

And don’t miss your chance today to pick up tickets for Theatre Lawrence’s upcoming performance of “The King and I.” The public sale began this morning. The show runs intermittently June 13 through 29.
