Police: Lawrence pill burglar caught in Dillons ceiling

A Lawrence man was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of aggravated burglary after he was detected in the ceiling of Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd St. The man is believed to be connected to two other incidents of burglary and theft of prescription drugs from a Dillons pharmacy, according to the Lawrence Police Department.

A Dillons employee heard noises coming from the ceiling and alerted a security guard at about 10 p.m. Saturday, said Lawrence police Sgt. Troy Squire. Officers were dispatched to the store and located the suspect in the ceiling after an hour of searching.

“They had to make their way up and coax him out of the ceiling,” Squire said.

Squire said the incident was similar in nature to two recent burglaries at the same store.

On Feb. 11, an unidentified suspect entered through the roof of Dillons. The suspect took prescription drugs from the pharmacy and caused about $500 in damage to ceiling tiles and light fixtures. On Jan. 9, a suspect caused similar damage to the store and stole nearly $300 in prescription drugs, including hydrocodone and vicodin.

Suwamet Hanratanagorn, 37, was booked into Douglas County Jail on Saturday on three counts of aggravated burglary and one count of unlawful cultivation or distribution of controlled substances.
