17-year-old struck by car remains in critical condition; Lawrence Bank creates benefit fund

A Lawrence girl is still in critical condition nearly a week after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to save a turtle from the road.

Christine Hamele, a spokeswoman for Overland Parker Regional Medical Center, said 17-year-old Mersadie L. Walker is stable but remains in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Walker has been in critical condition since the accident last week, when 36-year-old Elisabeth L. Mason, of Lawrence, struck Walker with her 2014 Chevy Cruze. Mason was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and failure to provide proof of liability insurance.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s assistant Cheryl Kunard said Wednesday that the case against Mason is under review as the investigation of the incident continues.

Lawrence Bank set up a benefit fund Wednesday to help pay for Walker’s medical bills. A news release by the bank said the funds will help offset Walker’s medical expenses along her “long road to recovery.”

Interested individuals can contribute to the fund at any Lawrence Bank location or send donations to Mersadie L. Walker Benefit Fund, c/o Lawrence Bank, PO Box 4530, Lawrence, KS 66046.
