To the editor:

The editor’s remarks in the June 7 Saturday Column about “partisan politics” and “the darker side of elective politics” are true regardless of one’s political affiliation. The same could be said for other “professions” where something to be gained is at stake.

Why do people do this?  It seems simple: People are selfish and when they work for a common cause, the character of their product doesn’t change because they work with like-minded people. One could say that what they are wanting is a noble cause, e.g., helping the poor, cleaning the environment, ending a war or providing everyone with affordable health care. If the result is so noble, then why is there a need to hide or ignore the facts?  It’s because we want our way; nothing else matters.

The Bible has some simple truths which would resolve our nation’s ills: Love your neighbor (even your enemy), do unto others as you would have them do unto you, do not demand your own way, give and it shall be given to you, deny yourself and take up your cross, etc. But we don’t really believe these truths work. Why? Because we want to do things our own way; be selfish. What does Jesus say, “repent;” i.e., don’t live our lives our way, but God’s! Our individual lives and that of our nation (present and future) depend on this simple truth. Righteousness exalts a nation and its people.  Forget your politics, remember your future depends on God, not your political party or partisan agenda.
