Letter: Expensive city

June 10, 2014

To the editor:

Kudos to the Journal-World for their June 5 editorial and equal kudos to J. Joe Herynk for his letter to the editor on the same day. Lawrence’s anemic growth does not justify many of the elaborate investments at this time.

I remember my late husband said to me several times, “You know, Barbara, we may not be able to afford to live in Lawrence after I retire.” Whenever out-of-town friends (often not retirees) express an interest in living in Lawrence, I always caution them that it is a very expensive city in which to live.

It is still a lot cheaper than most places. For instance, people from other parts of the country are surprised by how much less rent is in Lawrence than where they live.

Where do you plan to go?

Clipped from:

"The cost of living in Lawrence, Kansas (KS) is lower than the average cost of living in the state of Kansas and lower than the nationwide city average. The average annual pay in Lawrence is $33,015.00, which is $5,917.00 lower than the salary average in Kansas and lower than the U.S. average yearly wages by $13,727.00."

You can research other cities in Kansas here:

With just a bit of research, you will discover that Lawrence is actually a rather low priced place to live, compared with many other cities. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
