11 ways to beat back chiggers

No one is safe from the pesky chigger bite. Readers submitted their favorite remedies, and some may work for you.

Summer has arrived in Lawrence, which means that chigger season is upon us. Those annoying little creatures feed on your skin and, in turn, make you itch like crazy. We asked readers and other experts for methods they use to prevent and get rid of the nasty bites. Here are a few.

  1. Stay out of the grass and areas that are damp and have heavy vegetation. It’s the place where chiggers love to hang out.
  2. Use insect repellant with DEET. Make sure any bug spray you buy has DEET, the ingredient that repels chiggers.
  3. Cover your legs with hand lotion. One reader says that it appears to prevent chiggers from biting. Either way, it’s harmless.
  4. Put dryer sheets in your pockets. A reader says it keep away chiggers and mosquitos.
  5. Sprinkle sulfur powder around your ankles, socks and shoes. The powder reportedly repels chiggers.
  6. Apply Chigg-Away. This product supposedly prevents chigger bites and, if not, it also relieves itching from the bites.
  7. Put hydrocortisone on the bites. The topical cream helps with that itching that never seems to stop.
  8. Use Chiggerex. Its active ingredient is benzocaine, a local anesthetic.
  9. Apply a paste of crushed aspirin mixed with water. A reader claims it takes the itch right away.
  10. Go for a swim. One reader says the chlorinated water helps relieve the itching.
  11. Apply clear nail polish. While it hasn’t been scientifically proven to help chigger bites, many Kansans swear by it.

UPDATE:

Apply All Terrain Herbal Armour and Burt’s Bees All Natural Outdoor Herbal Insect Repellent. These natural products are DEET-free, non-toxic and can be bought at the Merc Co-op, 901 Iowa St. A reader says she puts some of the products on her ankles before working in the yard and has far fewer chigger bites at the end of the day.

Soak a wash cloth in insect repellant and rub it on the skin. A reader says it seems to work better this way because it has a thicker, more consistent coating than using a spray bottle.
