Lawrence girls upended in Emporia opener

? Lawrence High’s girls basketball team staked Topeka High to an 11-point first-quarter lead and fell, 49-35, on Thursday night in the first round of the Emporia Glacier’s Edge Tournament.

Kionna Coleman scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Lions. Marissa Pope added seven points, and Makayla Bell scored six.

“Defensively, we did some really positive things,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “We forced them into 23 turnovers. They battled really hard.”

The Lions trailed 15-4 after one quarter and 17-10 at halftime. Topeka then outscored the Lions 17-10 in the third quarter for a 34-20 lead.

The Lions (2-9) will play Wichita Southeast at 4:45 p.m. today.
