Lions wrestling wins first dual of season

In search of its first dual victory of the season, the Lawrence High wrestling team won convincingly, 58-18, against Olathe South on Thursday at LHS.

“I think we did really well. We’ve been sick, and we have a number of guys who are new to the varsity lineup who have been taking their lumps for the most part of the year,” LHS head coach Pat Naughton said. “Now all that has paid off. They were able to dish some of that punishment out on to some other people.”

The punishment included pins by the Lions in eight of their 14 matches against the Falcons. Of the three victories O-South earned, two of them came by forfeit since Lawrence had open spots in its lineup at 106- and 220-pound weight classes.

With the Lions in a 6-0 hole after forfeiting the 106-pound match, 113-pounder Xavier Kenney and 120-pounder Jhon Jacob put LHS in front, 12-6, with consecutive pins.

Olathe South’s Bailey Yetmar responded with a pin of his own against Cade Burghart, but it was all Lions after that.

LHS 132-pounder Garrett Girard pinned O-South’s Jacob Hawthrone in 46 seconds for one of five first-period victories for the Lions.

“Any time you get a first-period pin, it is just like bang, bang, bang, bang,” Naughton said. “Now you are on a roll. It is just like one after the other, and the other team is like, ‘How do we stop this?’ Once you get on a roll, it just feeds like fire for the entire team.”

While 138-pounder Zechariah Warren did not pin his opponent, his overtime victory against the Falcons’ Camron Finney helped boost the Lions’ confidence.

With Warren down, 13-12, in the final seconds of the third period, he needed to escape Finney’s grip to force overtime. Warren remained calm with time winding down and got the point on the escape to send the match to overtime.

“In the third period, I feel like it was just about having good position and just staying focused and listening to the coaches,” Warren said.

Momentum carried over from the third period, and Warren outlasted Finney in overtime to win by decision, 15-13.

“As far as overtime went, it was just a matter of conditioning,” Warren said.

The conditioning appeared to pay off for the rest of Warren’s teammates as well, with Tucker Wilson, Ryan Bellinger, Alan Clothier, John Drake and Alex Jones all winning by fall to round out the win.

The pins for Drake and Jones both came less than 35 seconds into their respective matches. Jones was pleased with his performance, but he was even happier with how his fellow Lions fared.

“I am very proud of some of my teammates, especially my wrestling partner Johnny (Drake),” Jones said. “I felt like he performed above what he usually practices at.”

The Lions will try to build off of Thursday’s dual victory when they compete today and Saturday in the Blue Valley Northwest tournament.

“I feel like we are going to do really well. I feel that we will place in the tournament,” Warren said. “We might be ranked really low, but I feel like as a team that we are strong. Lawrence High will always be strong.”
