Officers with the Lawrence Police Department responded to reports of battery and strong-arm robbery early Monday morning near Jayhawk Café.

Around 1:30 a.m., 12 units arrived at the 1400 block of Ohio Street, where an unknown man is said to have punched and took money from an 18-year-old Kansas University student.

Police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said a man approached the student requesting change for a $50 bill. The student took out $50 in smaller bills from his wallet. The man then punched the student in the face, took the money and ran southbound on Ohio Street, and then southwest toward the KU campus.

McKinley described the suspect as a 6-foot, 180-pound black male who was wearing a red T-shirt and dark jeans. Police have not located or identified him.

While responding to the robbery, an officer spotted a man running from Beta Theta Pi fraternity, 1425 Tennessee St., carrying a large, framed picture. The man ran west across Ohio Street toward the KU Scholarship Halls. The officer gave chase and captured the subject immediately, McKinley said.

The man, a 20-year-old KU student, was a member of another fraternity. Residents of Beta Theta Pi did not press charges; however, police did issue the man a citation for possession of a fake ID.
