Man arrested in connection with Sunday armed robbery appears in court

One of two men arrested in connection with a weekend armed robbery appeared in Douglas County District Court on Wednesday.

Jamal Dominique Pellis, 19, of Lawrence, has been in Douglas County Jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and possessing stolen property. On Wednesday, District Judge Michael Malone reduced Pellis’ bond from $50,000 to $20,000.

Lawrence police arrested Pellis and Chris Edward Spencer, 23, of Lawrence, on Sunday afternoon after an alleged armed robbery at an apartment in the 3100 block of Ousdahl Road. Police say two suspects knocked on an apartment door shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday and, upon entering, displayed a handgun to two occupants and demanded money.

Sgt. Max Miller of the Lawrence Police Department told the Journal-World that Pellis and Spencer were arrested about half an hour after a victim shared a description of the car they used to flee.

Spencer was released from jail on Tuesday on a $455 bond for failing to appear in municipal court in another matter. Charges related to the Sunday robbery weren’t initially filed by the district attorney’s office, but Assistant District Attorney Catherine Decena, who is leading the prosecution against Pellis, said she expected charges to be filed against Spencer within “the next two to three days.”

Decena said that Pellis and the victims were not strangers and that Spencer had a relationship with one of them, although she did not say what type of relationship.

Pellis is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 29.
