Police arrest 35-year-old Lawrence man after early-morning armed robbery at Presto gas station

Lawrence police have arrested a 35-year-old Lawrence man on suspicion of aggravated robbery after an early-morning armed robbery at a Presto gas station at 1802 W. 23rd St.

Eddie Miguel Rivera was booked into Douglas County Jail after being detained and questioned by police about a half hour after a Presto clerk reported the robbery at 5:11 a.m.

The clerk reported a man displaying a handgun and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. According to McKinley, the clerk said a man entered the store alone with an article of clothing covering his face and stalled upon noticing another customer in the store. His face still covered, the man then apparently behaved as though he was shopping, McKinley said, and approached the counter once the other customer left.

Police picked up a suspect, Rivera, within a half hour after the robbery, McKinley said. Rivera was found alone outside near a building just east of the gas station.

McKinley said police notified nearby Schwegler School officials about the incident, but said there were no public safety concerns following Rivera’s arrest. Police continued to search the area for evidence on Friday morning.
