Man sentenced to 36 months probation for aggravated burglary-robbery

A 21-year-old Wichita man received 36 months of probation Thursday in connection to an October 2012 burglary-robbery in Lawrence.

Nathaniel Thomas Welch pleaded no contest to charges of aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery. The sentence handed down is in lieu of a 32-month prison term, which will be served if Welch violates his probation.

He will also serve seven days of shock time in jail, beginning Thursday. Shock time is a short-term alternative sentence aimed at rehabilitation.

Welch allegedly entered a Lawrence apartment in October 2012 with a crowbar and stole various items. Douglas County District Judge Kay Huff ordered Welch to pay a restitution fee of about $2,800.

Welch apologized for his actions in court Thursday, saying they have “weighed on me heavily.”
