Firefighters investigating house fire on Yale Road

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical is investigating the cause of a Wednesday morning house fire in Lawrence.

Firefighters respond to a house fire Wednesday at 2425 Yale Road

Firefighters were called to a structure fire at 2425 Yale Road at about 10:15 a.m. When they arrived, emergency workers found smoke and flames billowing from a single-story home.

Firefighters called in a second alarm around 10:45 a.m. and had the fire under control by 11 a.m. Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said all residents were accounted for and that only one person was home when the fire started.

Most of the flames visible from the exterior came from a bedroom at the back of the home, the owner’s daughter-in-law, Shelly Byrn, said.

Byrn said she learned of the fire just as her family reached Interstate 70 on their way out of town. Her mother-in-law, who was out of state, called her to say, “I think my house is on fire.” The family had just left the home to return to Nebraska, where they live, after staying at her husband’s childhood home for a few days, Byrn said.

“I was just in that bedroom this morning,” Byrn said. “I was checking to turn everything off before we left. I don’t know what it could have been.”

Byrn said that the only person in the residence at the time of the fire was a renter who lived on the bottom floor of the house, and he got out of the house without injuries.

Lyle Schultz, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical division chief, said the fire did not appear to be suspicious. He estimated damage to the home to be as much as $60,000.
