Letter: Wrong hall

To the editor:

I was standing in the lobby outside the Lawrence City Commission meeting Dec. 2, when I saw two young women come in the back door and look around as if searching for something. They got to the elevator and stood looking at the plaque that describes which offices are on each floor. One of the women pushed the “down” button, which would take them to the ground level to the offices of the city engineers, but at 7:30 at night no one would be there.

I moved over to the women and asked, “Are you looking for something?” They said, “The Festival of Trees.” I said, “Oh, that’s at Liberty Hall” and they replied, “Where are we now?” I said, “This is City Hall.” I explained they had to go a block south to get there, and they left.

This was a very unusual incident and it surprised me that they didn’t know much about downtown Lawrence. I trust they learned the difference between City Hall and Liberty Hall, although sometimes City Commission meetings are equal to the entertainment value at Liberty Hall.
