Lawrence 18-year-old charged with aggravated robbery

Jessie Dean-Deayshawn Hughes, 18, of Lawrence, was charged Friday with aggravated robbery and interference with law enforcement after allegedly stealing an SUV at gunpoint and fleeing from police on foot Thursday evening.

Lawrence police arrested Hughes after being called to the 500 block of Florida Street at 5:43 p.m. for a robbery in progress, Detective Sgt. Bronson Star of the Lawrence Police Department said. The victim told police that when he was about to enter his SUV, a man approached him with a gun and commandeered the vehicle.

Police found the SUV unoccupied in the 1800 block of West Second Street, and a police officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near the intersection of Fourth and Florida streets, Star said. After a foot chase, Hughes was apprehended in the 400 block of Michigan Street about 6 p.m., Star said.

A K-9 unit from the Topeka Police Department assisted in locating the gun, which had been left on the ground in an area the suspect had run through, Star said.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Hughes’ bond at $75,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday. Hughes remained in the Douglas County Jail as of Friday evening.
