Two Lawrence men, one a pro baseball player, charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary

Two Lawrence Free State High School graduates, one a minor league baseball player in the Boston Red Sox farm system, were charged Monday with four counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary in connection with a home-invasion robbery at an apartment in the 900 block of Arkansas Street on Nov. 8.

Gabriel Alexander Patterson, 20, and professional baseball player Cody Scott Kukuk, 21, both of Lawrence, were arrested Nov. 17 in Long Beach, Calif., on outstanding robbery warrants out of Kansas, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said last month. They were extradited to Douglas County last week, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log.

Two other Lawrence men, 21-year-old Zachary John Pence and 19-year-old Driskell Alan Johnson, were charged last month in connection with the home-invasion robbery.

Police alleged that the men entered the Arkansas Street apartment with handguns, battered residents and took their belongings. Court documents allege that cash, two cellphones, an Xbox 360 and the contents of a safe were taken during the incident.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Patterson’s bond at $150,000 and Kukuk’s bond at $75,000, assistant to the Douglas County district attorney Cheryl Wright Kunard said. If Kukuk makes bail, he will be subject to GPS monitoring.

George could not be reached for comment on why the men’s bond amounts differed.

They remain in the Douglas County Jail and are scheduled to make their next appearance on Dec. 4.
