Letter: Important election

To the editor:

Our paranoid Kansas secretary of state and the “do nothing” Congress have joined forces to make our fair state yet again an example of buffoonery for the rest of the country. Mr. Kobach has spent much of his time in office crusading against a non-problem by tightening our voting procedures.  He has succeeded in keeping honest citizens from voting — those without the necessary credentials or resources to obtain them — but it is doubtful that he has actually prevented any voter fraud that he so fears. Actually some 18,000 people, potential voters, are on hold for lack of acceptable documents.

Now Kobach wants federal ballot forms changed to reflect the more-stringent Kansas requirements, but Congress for the last three years has failed to appoint any members to the federal Election Assistance Commission. Thus, it appears no decision will be made, and again, Kansas appears to be the epicenter of ineffective government.

“What’s the matter with Kansas?”is no longer an interesting historical reference; it is a question we all must ask today. The good news is that an election is coming, and we have the opportunity to bring reason back to our state government. It is imperative that all Kansans get out to vote or, better yet, vote early. This is a year when every vote will be important.
