14 apply for vacancy on Lawrence school board

Fourteen people have applied to fill a vacancy on the Lawrence school board.

Those applying are Paul Buskirk, Scott Criqui, Jill Fincher, Lindsey Frye, Marcel Harmon, T. Eli Horn, Anne Koprince, Neal Lintecum, Mary Loveland, Marlene Merrill, Wilfredo Rosado-Chaparro, William Roth, William Simmons and Kelly Spurgeon.

Earlier this month, Adina Morse resigned from the seven-member board because she was selected as the executive director of the Lawrence Schools Foundation, which provides funding to benefit students and teachers.

A Kansas Supreme Court ruling from 2000 says that a school district employee cannot serve on the board of education of the same district. The Lawrence school district employs the foundation’s executive director, although the foundation reimburses the district for the employee’s salary and benefits.

At its Sept. 8 meeting, the school board will discuss the applications received and appoint a member to serve the remainder of Morse’s term, which expires June 30, 2015.

Many of those applying had also applied in June for another vacancy that was eventually filled by Bob Byers.
