LHS hoops alum Dorian Green leaves coaching job to play overseas

Colorado State guard Dorian Green celebrates as time expires in an 84-72 NCAA Tournament victory over Missouri on March 21, 2013, in Lexington, Ky. Green is a former Lawrence High standout.

After one year as an assistant coach at Furman University, former Lawrence High basketball standout Dorian Green is leaving the college coaching ranks. For now.

Green, a 23-year-old Colorado State alumnus, signed a one-year deal with Allianz Swans Gmunden in the Austrian Basketball League. Green said he learned a lot at Furman from first-year head coach Niko Medved — an assistant at CSU for six years — but the draw of playing professional basketball remained too strong.

“I wasn’t ready to be done playing. Most importantly, especially with having the year off and being away from the game, I just missed it,” Green said. “I knew that if I wanted to play again, I probably had one last chance, so I just kind of jumped on it and took it.”

Green will leave for Austria in mid-August. ABL action is scheduled to begin in early October. Allianz Swans Gmunden’s roster is primarily composed of players of Austrian descent, but Green will have a few American teammates, including former University of Illinois forward Tyler Griffey.

Before accepting a job on Medved’s staff last summer, Green had been inquiring about the idea of playing professionally, but couldn’t pass up on beginning his coaching career.

“I was basically dead-set on going to play, and then at the last minute changed my mind and got into coaching,” Green said. “I kept in contact with some of the agents I have talked to and through them, I ended up getting the opportunity to land the job in Austria and continue to play.”

Furman went 9-21 during the 2013-14 campaign with Medved at the helm. Green remains thankful for the chance Medved gave him to join the Paladins’ staff, and has not ruled out a return to coaching after his playing days are done.

“It’s something that I will definitely look into. I love coaching,” Green said. “I enjoyed it and had a great time doing it. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. It’s something that I look forward to in the future when I’m done playing and looking into that again.”

Green acknowledged that it has been difficult to get back into his top-playing shape after taking a year off, but said he’s motivated to get back on the court.

“I think the perspective and being away from the game and missing it, it kind of had that fire in me going again,” Green said. “I’ve always played my best when I’ve had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder and felt like I’ve really had a lot to prove.”

Green finished his career at Colorado State with 1,464 points, which placed him sixth on the Rams’ all-time scoring list. He also set a school record for games played and led CSU to four straight postseason appearances, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
